The gastroenterologist screens for, diagnoses and treats diseases of the digestive system as varied as:

• diseases of the liver and bile ducts (stones, tumors, etc.);

• hepatitis;

• digestive bleeding;

• diseases of the pancreas;

• digestive cancers.

As the inside of the digestive tract can be visualized well by endoscopy, the gastroenterologist often uses this technique to investigate his patient. In colon cancer prevention, the gastroenterologist is the expert in endoscopic removal of polyps, still precancerous lesions, thus avoiding colon cancer and potential surgery.

Consultation with a hepato-gastroenterologist takes place at the request of the attending physician or another specialist. This referral enables examinations to be carried out and/or interpreted in order to establish a diagnosis, set up a treatment, or perform a particular technical procedure.
